I am a cat3 cyclist living in Ireland (Irish cat3 is equivalent to US cat4) my best result last year was 2nd in a cat3 race and I obtained 8 points (10 points requied to upgrade to cat2). I have been racing and training for 10 years now. So my goals for this year are as follows -
1st position in a cat3 race - I will win one race this year.
Upgrade to a category 2 license - 10 points required. (6 points for a win, 5 for 2nd etc).
Make the break in at least one cat2 race.

I got bit with the racing bug three years ago, maybe a little later than I would have liked, but nonetheless, it has been my dream ever since then to turn professional on the road. This year it's happening. I will have a pro contract, at the latest, by the end of 2010. I've cut my teeth on NCNCA circuit, and that's where I intend to make it happen.

Just read your Awesome article and just writing to tell you my "main" 2010 goal, and that's simply to sign with a Pro team. I have several other major races I plan to do well in as well, but "The Goal" for me ....simply racing with a Pro team.

I’m going to make this short and sweet, my goal for the 2010 season is to win the Athens cat3 race and the amateur finals that evening. I just came back to Florida from the tour of the Bahamas and my fitness is right on track! Post it, follow up with me and if you’d like I’ll give you a picture of me on the podium.

On Saturday April 4 I will ride the 260 km Ronde van Vlaanderen for cycling tourists in less than 12 hours (my goal is 11 hours). (Last year I rode my first La Marmotte in 8 hours 57 minutes, 33 minutes faster than the goal of 9 hours 30 minutes I set). http://www.sport.be/cyclingtour/rondevanvlaanderen/2010/eng/
At the moment I am lagging behind in my training schedule, so what I will do is start today with my program
In addition, I will join a local competition (which I have never done so far) once every two weeks starting Sunday February 21 (following dates March 7 and March 28) and ride a 150 km flat race (http://www.swift-leiden.nl/index.php?option=com_JZC&view=deelnemers&Itemid=152) which I will finish within 6 hours.
After this my goal is to ride Maratona dles Dolomites (www.maratona.it) for which I have not yet set a specific goal (will set it after Ronde van Vlaanderen) besides finishing first of the group of 7 guys with whom I will travel to Italy to race the Maratona.
In the entire process I aim to lose 4 kg of weight (I weigh 81 kg at the moment).

I will ride three centuries this year . . . atleast I will beat my time that I set last year at the Lark Mountain Hill Climb TT . . . by atleast 2 minutes.

She recently asked me to join her in a 5k run she entered in March. Being the supportive husband that I am I quickly agreed knowing that the only time I would ever willingly run is when chased and only if I was out of ammo! She set a goal and I want to do whatever I can to support it.
A few weeks ago I decided that I was going to finish the 137 mi leg of the Mt. Shasta Century in Mt. Shasta, CA. My ever supportive wife embraced the idea and decided it would be a great week for a family getaway. What she didnt tell me was that she invited several of our closest friends and their families to join us and to support me. Result = Fear of Failure factor has increased ten fold!
I am still motivated by the fear of failure. However, the fear of letting my wife down, by not being able to give her 100% support in attaining her goal, and by letting her down by not achieving my goal, has surpassed my fear of failure.
I am reasonably fit for a 36 year old office schmuck and I would love to work with you to make sure I am doing everything I can to prep for my ride this year. I'll be sure to send you a note with my results for the Summit Ride. It will be a finishing time of less than 8 hours.

My Goal: 55 minute 40KM ITT
That would be 3 min off my PR and I have dedicated the next two seasons to TTing and training specifically toward this objective.

Solvang Double in 12 hrs –March 27 [196 mi./ 7000 ft. climbing. Haven’t done a double in 30 years!]
Death Ride in 11 hrs –July 10 [126 mi./15600 ft. climbing. This will be my 5th time in a row]]
French Alps Ride – August 13-22 Lake Geneva to the Mediterranean [about 600 miles with an option to Mt. Ventou 70000+ ft climbing. I did this 3 years ago with the same crazy German guys and was always the last up the climbs.]
My goal is to lose those extra 25 lbs so the hills aren’t so nasty on my 56 yr. old body. I get in 150+ miles a week of training but its difficult to keep up the intensity all year. Took off 7 weeks this winter after a crash/hip injury only to find I lost fitness/conditioning and gained weight. Goals help me to remain focused. Going to the weight room 2 or 3 days a week for power. Wish it would stop raining up here in Nor Cal.

I turn 50 this year and race in New England. Get a top ten in a Masters 45 plus race. Finish with the pack in a hilly road race. Be competitive in the local Wednesday Crit/World Championship.

As a goal I've set myself to be able to do 25mph on a 10m time trial. As I've never done any competative cycling, I don't know whether that's an over-ambitious goal, or an under-ambitious one. Either way, I'm gonna go for it, and that's my destiny.

For 2010, my main personal cycling goal is that I will drop 15 minutes from my time riding up Mt Baker during the Mount Baker hillclimb. I climbed this 2 seasons ago and barely met my goal of 2 hours (I had about 29 seconds to spare), and I’ve since dropped 20 pounds and quit smoking..

My goal: I want to raise my threshold from 280 to 310 watts this year.
It's a large jump, maybe too much, but I think that it's possible.
Other goals: To win a race. To make the jump to Cat 2. To help a teammate win. To do more 4hr rides. Lots of them, yes, but it's always good to aim high.

I have one overarching goal for 2010: win the ACCC Division C points championship. This means racing (well) in 18 races from Feb. 13 to the conference championships April 18.

My goals are pretty straight forward, I want to return better and faster than I was before the accident. I purchased powercranks for my training bike to help in the process. I am planning on 8-10 tri's this season beginning in March, my goal is always to win AG, and place top twenty overall.

1) Break 340w at FTP, at 70kg.
2) Contribute to Ladd and Jay winning 6 or more races. I have a reasonable engine, but I'm not stronger than my teammates Ladd Lumpkin or Jay Charles. Also, I don't have much of a tactical brain -- I've spent too much time over the last fifteen years cracking jokes at the back of the bunch. I need to learn how to use the engine to help my team leaders.
3) Break 22:15 at Lowe's, on my road bike, no aerobars.
4) Finish in the top 5 in the 40+ at the French Broad Road Race.
5) Finish in the money 3+ times.

1) GET SYMMETRICAL
This will be through a combination of stretching, physical therapy exercises and one leg pedalling drills (e.g. cables, tubing, exercise balls, ankle weights, dumbbells, etc.). A specific upper body, core, and lower body plan is in place.
Why ? Last June I crashed and broke my upper left arm. Plus previously my right leg was weakened by IT band tension and Chrondomalacia in the knee. That has aggravated the right lower back. Spin scan for example looks ugly ! Power cranks are an option, once the one leg drills prove reinjury is not an issue.
2) BUILD AN AEROBIC FOUNDATION & LOSE 25 LB
Slowly work back to a consistent 10 hours per week, emphasizing rides at 135 to 150 bpm versus LTHR at 168 bpm. In parallel work on a more disciplined diet.
3) BUILD CYLING FITNESS
Ramp up the cycling, BUT only if successful with goal #2 - through a classic combination of subthreshold, threshold and anaerobic work, with appropriate rest. In other words make sure the knee is fully recovered before adding climbing and other hard efforts. Target a few long organized rides as needed.

My goal is a lofty goal. I’ll be 50 this year and live in Cincinnati. I’ve competed in the Masters Nationals for the last 2 years with results in the 20’s in both the road race and the crit. This year, masters are again in Louisville and my goal is to finish in the top 5.

I would like to develop my threshold power to 4.5 Watts/kg and my 5-second power to 17 Watts/kg. I'm sure that these figures would place me in the upper tier of the other Cat-3's around my area (Indiana).
Peace,
Eric Johnson
